An SAP consultant helps customers to get to know the SAP software and to use it optimally for the business processes of the specialist departments, for example in accounting, controlling, purchasing, sales, production or human resources. A consultant usually specializes in a specialist area, such as accounting, in which he or she is already well versed. The consultant guides the customer through the standard processes that the SAP software brings with it and records additional requirements. He or she then sets up the software accordingly, tests the various functions together with the customer, helps train the end users and organizes the move from the previous IT system to the SAP solution - this is called migration.

An SAP developer (programmer) has specialist knowledge in SAP
Programming and plays a crucial role in customization and expansion
of SAP software for companies. An SAP developer should have in-depth knowledge of
SAP programming, including programming languages such as ABAP or
SAPUI5. Furthermore, understanding of business processes, problem-solving skills and
Teamwork matters. An SAP developer supports companies in developing their SAP
Adapt systems to your individual needs and work seamlessly with other systems
to integrate. This improves the efficiency of business processes and enables the
Implementation of customer-specific requirements.

A SAP project manager takes over the planning and control of SAP projects and
is responsible for their successful implementation within the specified budget
and time frame. A successful SAP project manager has strong
Skills in project planning, communication, risk management and team leadership.
There is also a comprehensive understanding of SAP systems and business processes
essential. The SAP project manager helps ensure that SAP projects run smoothly
are carried out, goals are achieved and the value of the SAP implementation for that
company is maximized. They ensure that projects are completed within the specified limits
parameters are completed.

You already have 2 years of professional experience or more in a corporate function. This could be HR, sales, purchasing, logistics, accounting or something else. If you are also IT-savvy and familiar with one of the processes mentioned above, you have the most important skills. You may also have experience in advising on other topics and may be familiar with products from other market competitors.

Natasha's Career as a SAP consultant at CONET

“Through the Join the #SAPFamily initiative, I found the ideal path into the SAP world and began an exciting career as an SAP consultant at CONET.”

SAP Consultant at
CONET Technologies Holding GmbH

Hello Natascha! What is your professional background?

I studied economics with a focus on logistics at the Technical University of Central Hesse and then worked in various roles for an energy solutions provider. There, as an SAP user, I had my first contact with SAP. As a "Customer Operations Specialist," I had a coordinating role, created contracts, was responsible for coordinating disruptions and entered them into SAP.

My background

How did your IT affinity manifest itself?
I am very practical and try to understand and solve technical problems directly and quickly. I quickly find my way around a digital environment and make the right decisions.

IT affinity

Did you previously plan to change industries or go into SAP consulting?
Absolutely not. A friend of mine once moved from being an IT project manager to SAP consulting and that was the first time I became aware of the topic.

SAP consulting

How did you find out about the job?
I saw a very appealing advert for “Join the #SAPFamily” on Instagram and thought, why not? I clicked on it straight away, completed the survey and was contacted by CONET a few days later and invited to an interview.

#SAPFamily on Instagram

How did the interview go?
I first had an introductory meeting with the recruiting and human resources departments at CONET. In the second interview, other colleagues from the department were present and, in the final instance, the company's managing director. It was always a pleasant conversation - a classic interview where you get to know each other and exchange ideas.

Job Interview

How long have you been here?
I have been with CONET since August 1, 2023.

I've been here for so long

What made it easier for you to get started?
Since I already knew SAP as a user, that was an advantage for me. In addition, the atmosphere at CONET is great. There is no pressure, so you can develop in peace. I am very grateful for that.

Development without pressure

When did you have your first customer contact?
During the induction phase I was in Magdeburg. I was able to observe a lot and shortly afterwards was able to take part in my first customer workshop. That was a great experience.

First customer contact

What exactly are you doing now?
I am currently studying for an SAP certification and am working on the Fiori app. I also support my colleagues in certain projects.

This is what I am currently doing

Was something difficult for you?
Yes, the area of financial accounting (FI/Accounting) was difficult for me because I had never had anything to do with it before. But where there's a will, there's a way.

Challenges

What advice would you give to career changers?
Don't be afraid. Leave your comfort zone and just dare to do it. It's a challenge, but with great colleagues the journey is a lot of fun.

Tahas SAP career at NTT Data

“The Join the #SAPFamily initiative gave me the perfect introduction to the SAP world and showed me how exciting and diverse a career in SAP consulting can be.”

ABAP developer at
NTT DATA Business Solutions

Have you ever planned to change industries?
to go into SAP consulting?
My background is in business informatics, in which I did a bachelor's and a master's degree. I have always been in the digital industry, since 2017 to be precise. Getting into the SAP world was a spontaneous decision. During my master's degree, I was given the task of developing a UI-5 application. The logical path for me would therefore be to go into web development. I had asked around among friends and acquaintances and only decided to go into the SAP field shortly before the end of my studies.

My background

How did you find out about the job?

I joined NTT Data through the "Join the #SAPFamily" initiative. I looked around the market and the Internet because I was looking for a job and that's how I came across Join the #SAPFamily. I applied and was contacted by NTT Data shortly after and invited to an interview.

Discovered thanks to #SAPFamily

What tasks did you have to complete in the interview?
It was a classic job interview. We talked about my career, the areas I've worked in, what experience I have and where my journey might take me. There were no specific tasks to solve.

Interview and tasks

How long have you been here now?
I have been employed at NTT Data since June 1, 2023.

I've been here for so long

What made it easier for you to get started?
NTT has a great onboarding concept. You are assigned a coach and from the first week you are given training courses that you are expected to complete. If you can then learn a few things yourself through self-study, you are clearly at an advantage.

Great onboarding concept

How did your IT affinity manifest itself?
I have a general interest in software, systems and technology. I already had some initial experience at the university of applied sciences and took a few subjects in which I dealt with the digital industry and IT.

My IT affinity

When did you have your first customer contact?
Just three weeks after starting my job, I had my first contact with a customer, where I was able to quickly apply my theoretical knowledge.

First customer contact

What exactly are you doing now?
I am now working as a SAP developer

My work

Was something difficult for you?
You have to be able to deal with many types of ABAP development. Some customers have older developments. Each customer has also developed certain applications differently. The challenge is to find your way around quickly.

challenges

What advice would you give to career changers?
SAP has done a lot to present the technology in a modern way. It is a simple and intuitive language. I advise anyone who is IT-savvy and interested in software development to get to grips with SAP technology and ABAP development.

Elena's Path to SAP consulting

“By joining the #SAPFamily I have found an exciting and rewarding career at Conet.”
SAP Consultant at CONET Technologies Holding GmbH
Elena! Tell us, had you ever thought about changing industries and going into SAP consulting?
Yes, actually! I saw how more and more processes are being automated and asked myself: what am I going to do with my brain cells? After thinking about it for a long time, I decided that I wanted to work in this industry and in the field of digitalization. The fact that it will be SAP technology is of course fantastic.

Industry change

How did you find out about the job?
SAP is a big name, and during my internships I already had contact with SAP systems from a user perspective. I found it really interesting to see how processes work and how the world of IT works. This fascination led me to delve deeper into the technology and pursue a career in this field.

Fascination SAP

What tasks did you have to complete in the interview?
I had a technical interview there, where I had to answer a few questions about my experience. We also talked about systems and processes. Finally, the management wanted to get to know me, and we also talked about other topics, but not in depth.

Interview procedure

How long have you been here now?
I've been here for six months now. During the induction phase, which lasted six months, I was partly in Bonn and was able to do my onboarding remotely, which was great. That meant I didn't have to move for the job. I work from home and travel to the customer when necessary.

Remote

What made it easier for you to get started?
My spontaneity and resistance to stress helped me a lot.

My strengths

Why is spontaneity important?
Because there is always something new coming our way and we have to react flexibly.

Open to new

When did you first have contact with a customer?
After just two months, I had my first customer contact together with my mentor.

First customer contact

What exactly are you doing now?
I work with SAP Fiori. I test "best practice scenarios" and learn from my colleagues every day. I also have access to my own demo systems in which I carry out independent tasks. This allows me to learn how to put theoretical knowledge into practice and at the same time I can take on my first tasks in the customer environment. This is of course done in a team setting, so that there is no stress and I can develop slowly. I think it will take me between six months and a year before I can work productively on customer projects.

My work

Did you find anything difficult when you entered the industry?
Nothing was really difficult for me, but the industry is a male-dominated field and communication was unusual at first. But now I know how it works and they also benefit from my strengths. I also prefer direct contact with people and not so much communication in front of the camera, which is often the case in this digital environment.

Challenges

Is there anything else you would like to add?
You definitely have to be open and interested. Shyness is not an option. As a consultant, you have to be able to communicate well - with customers, colleagues and competitors. I hope that my story can inspire and motivate others to take the step and try their hand in the world of SAP consulting. Through Join the #SAPFamily, I have found an exciting and rewarding career at Conet.
